Tom van Huisstede (1993) is an Amsterdam-based photographer with a passion for music, nature, technology, design, and dogs – in no particular order. Being experienced in art direction, digital and film photography, graphic design and video, Tom has worked on both commercial and personal projects. He is also father to his son, Taake.

You assume that you must be loud to be heard? Tom will show you otherwise — his images are quiet, and closely felt. Instead of creating run-of-the-mill peppy commercial images, he represents the strength of the introverted voice.

Tom shoots photos of genuine emotions and intimacy in a subtle and peaceful style that mirrors his personality. He is a calm observer fascinated by people and their unique mannerisms. He often takes a step back when shooting, letting things unfold naturally before he picks up his camera. By giving a scene or person the space to just be, he creates highly detailed photos.

In his work, Tom loves to play with light. He guides the eye of the audience where it might not naturally go with soft, powdery lighting – to highlight details that would stay unseen. He has the talent to blend his artful style with a commercial message. But he is not bound to one technique or medium.

Being neurodiverse himself, Tom has a mission to genuinely represent diverse people within his work. And to change what commercial photography can be by being strongly softspoken.
